Endocrinology
What is endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the study of the organs or groups of cells within the body which secrete hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers, produced by the body to act on specific internal targets. They may provide stimulation to their target, or conversely may inhibit it, but overall they play a large role in regulating metabolism within the body.
Although many tissues within the body secrete hormones, those with the main responsibility are called the endocrine glands, and examples include the adrenal, thyroid and pituitary. The body has feedback systems in place which provide tight control of hormone production, and this, in turn, ensures metabolic processes are appropriate for each animal.
When disease within endocrine systems occurs, hormones may be produced in excess, or sometimes are not produced at all. The impact of this may be sudden, or can be insidious and slow in onset. Regardless of presentation, animals become ill, and veterinary intervention is required to reduce the negative impact endocrine disease can have on the health and quality of life of dogs and cats alike.
